At 6 weeks, the scar reaches about 80% strength.Kenneth Hughes, MDLos Angeles, CA...................
Duong,Depending on how recent your surgery was and how strongly it was hit, there is a slight chance that there may have been a shift in the chin implant. This would most likely have to occur 1-2 weeks after your surgery for the movement to have happened. The implant is strong and nearly secure 1 month post op. If you still have the concern that your implant has moved, I recommend seeing your surgeon for a check up.Best of Luck!Dr. Ali Sajjadian
Chin implants are typically a quick and minimally invasive procedure that has a short recovery process. For 1 week, patients have sutures in place and some minor bruising and swelling. The implant is placed in a small pocket. It will be secure in about 4 weeks as the body heals around the implant. It will not shift after this time.
Chin implants should be placed in a very tight pocket along the jaw. As a result it should be hard to shift an anatomic implant at any time. However, if you have a severe enough trauma you can shift any implant at any point in the healing phase or beyond. I hope this information is helpful for you.Stephen Weber MD, FACSDenver Facial Plastic Surgeon
I would say the immediate healing period for a chin implant is about a week. There is some swelling still present at this time though and it would take several months for that to subside. In regards to hitting the implant afterwards, an implant could potentially be shifted at any time if enough force is used. In most cases, there is a capsule that forms around the implant after a few days and this does tend to hold it in place. If the implant is mildly bumped or hit, it should not move after this time. If the implant is hit very hard, it could move anytime after it is placed.
The risk of chin implant shifting can be avoided immediately by securing it with screws fixation at the time of surgery. The amount of healing then will have no impact on whether it can shift or not later.
Visible bruising and swelling after a chin implant usually resolves in about 2 weeks. Final healing takes 2-3 months for all the swelling to subside. Chin implants are placed in a very precise pocket underneath the periosteum of the bone and rarely do they ever shift. For many examples, please see the links below
The chin implant should be placed in a pocket. Typically, it will not move, however if you were hit hard enough soon after your surgery, it may have shifted. I suggest you see your surgeon to be sure it didn't move. After a month, your implant most likely will not move at all.
It should not be easy to dislodge a well placed implant in a small pocket or with attachment to the mandible. Donald R. Nunn MD Atlanta Plastic Surgeon
You describe usual changes after a chin implant. The feeling will usually return and your smile return to normal. This is all from swelling. You should see slow improvement however. Keep in touch with your surgeon. Discuss your concerns with her/him.
It is possible to up-size a chin implant. This can be performed under local anesthesia. The previous incision is cut out and the old implant is removed as well. Once the old implant has been removed, the pocket is made bigger and the new implant introduced into the new expanded...
Your photo suggests you are recovering well with the implant out. The tape is a good idea. I agree with your surgeon that after swelling subsides, you will be happy with the result.
