Following a traumatic injury, I gained 80+ lbs over the course of two years. I’ve recently recovered from my final spinal surgery and am ready to get my life back starting with weight loss surgery. I’m self pay with a 35.6 BMI and was approved due to comorbidities. I am 211 lbs and would like to get back to 130. I was approved for a sleeve, but don’t know that I can achieve desire results through that method. What can I expect with a sleeve and should I consider a bypass?
Answer: Gastric bypass may be a better option The gastric sleeve (VSG) is a very effective method for significant weight loss, especially for those with a BMI in the 30-40 range. On average, patients can expect to lose about 60-70% of their excess weight within the first 18-24 months. Given that you have a goal of losing around 81 lbs, achieving about 50-55 lbs of weight loss would be within the typical range, though results can vary based on individual factors such as metabolism, adherence to post-surgery guidelines, and physical activity levels. However, because you're aiming for a loss of about 80 lbs, you may find that the sleeve alone might not get you all the way to your desired weight, especially if you have some hormonal or metabolic factors that could affect weight loss. In that case, the gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) could be considered. The bypass tends to provide more significant weight loss, particularly in individuals with a higher BMI or metabolic challenges. It also has the advantage of improved control over diabetes and other comorbidities,

Answer: Hello!!! Hey! Thank you for your question Sleeve gastrectomy surgery permanently removes 80 percent of your stomach. The surgeon then sews the rest of the stomach into a small pouch or sleeve. Gastric bypass, on the other hand, has a small stomach pouch created through bypassing most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. This small pouch is reconnected to the remaining small intestine. The area of the small intestine that is removed is the part that does most of the absorbing of some nutrients and calories, therefore making it effective in losing weight. Both surgeries are completed laparoscopically and require plenty of rest afterward. Taking care of yourself will help your body heal quicker and help with a smoother recovery process. Gastric bypass is more complicated than gastric sleeve surgery, so sometimes that can play a factor in what your recovery is like. Your doctor will go over the various procedures you’ll need to follow after surgery, including how you will need to restrict your activity and change your diet. Not following the surgery guidelines afterward could cause unnecessary complications like infection, pain and more. I do recommend that you have a consultation with a professional just to see your clinical history and see of the procedure is best for your particular case. Hope this was helpful.

Answer: Gastric sleeve vs bypass You will need to have a consultation with a Certify Bariatric Surgeon to have your case review. But if your problem is just the weight and body fat percentage, with out comorbidities, like diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, the gastric sleeve is a very good tool for weight loss and has similar metabolic outcomes as the gastric bypass.
