It is best to review all of your concerns with your injector. An experienced injector will be able to predict what type of outcome you can expect. It is very unlikely that you will get large lips with just one syringe of filler. For example, one syringe of Restylane is only 1ml and usually 2 or 3ml is needed over time to achieve "Kylie" lips. Certain lip shapes are definitely better suited for some and not others.Injectable fillers can also be used in the nose to upturn or to smooth the look of bumps. Be sure to see an expert! 

I generally like to get an idea of the preferred lip shape and photos brought in are a great starting point however as you correctly say , lip shape and volume need to be tailored to each person.
I then advise what I believe what will give a most aesthetic result .This includes discussion around how  defintion vs lip volme is prioritised but also on wheter  the surrounding structures supporting and framing the lips needs attention
