If your cough is due to bacterial infection, you should not have breast augmentation. You do not want to risk bacteria infecting the implants. Also, coughing post op will be uncomfortable and could increase bruising.Better to postpone until cough gone- discuss with your plastic surgeon.
It’s best to inform your surgeon about your cough so that they can decide on what to do. Your surgery may need to be rescheduled if it’s safer for you.
It is important to be completely healthy before undergoing any surgical procedure. You should definitely discuss this with your surgeon and Anesthesiologist, as well as be evaluated by your primary care physician. Best of luck with your upcoming procedure.
I appreciate your concerns. Sorry to hear about the cough!I always recommend that my breast augmentation patients be in the best health possible while undergoing surgery. If you are unsure about the state of your health and how this may affect your procedure, it is important to let your doctor know beforehand. If they determine that you are in good enough health to proceed, then the surgery will move forward as planned. If they decide to postpone your surgery while you recover from a cold or flu, keep in mind they are doing this ultimately for your safety. If you have questions about whether you’re healthy enough to have surgery, please contact your board certified plastic surgeon. best of luck! Any form of cosmetic surgery is totally elective and safety is the number one concern. I have cancelled cases even the morning of surgery with the patient already in the hospital if they had a caugh that was new and not a chronic condition. You are better be safe than sorry.
If you have a wet cough or oxygenation issues, often it's best to postpone the surgery. Without an exam, it will not be possible to fully evaluate you and give you recommendations.
Elective surgery should be performed only under the most optimal conditions. There is no need to take an unnecessary risk.Any sign of a cold/illness i.e. a productive cough places you at risk for post-operative complications. I would recommend follow up with your primary care physician who may or may not choose to treat you. Your board certified plastic surgeon may choose to reschedule, if it is in your best interest.
Thank you for your question. You should postpone your surgery, when you heal completely. Your health is first, if something gets complicated in your surgery you'll need to be in your best form.
Your surgeon would be your best resource of information regarding pre and post-op concerns as each surgeon has his/her own protocols.
I would run your concerns past your PS. If you have had a preop and your bloods are normal and everything else normal and you are asymptomatic and the anaesthetist happy then a cough on its own is not an absolute contra indication. Best to be at your optimal health though prior to an op and postponing is not the end of the world.
