Umbilicoplasty on a Shallow Navel? (photo)

I posted a question a while back about having umbilicoplasty on my shallow navel to add depth and or inner creases/folds to add more detail. I appreciate all of the previous answers.

Yes, the belly button can be revised to be deeper. This may require a surgery to pull the belly button in toward the fascia or some fat grafting around the perimeter.

The photograph is inadequate to permit a precise surgical strategy. Narrowing the diameter of the umbilicus possibly some fat grafting might improve the aesthetic situation.

If you are very thin, then you can not really have a very deep belly button. Still, I do notice that yours has no hooding. This could be corrected, but based on the limited photo, I can not tell if it would necessarily look better.

It is possible to add depth to your umbilicus.  Better photographs would be helpful to understand the extent of your problem.

Thanks for the question and the photo attached. The picture is a bit too close up to tell how it fits in with the entire abdomen.

	It looks to me like the base of the navel is already flush with the abdominal wall, so making it deeper is not likely something that can be done. That leaves building up the surrounding tissue with fat grafts, provided you have a source of fat to be harvested. 

	This problem really demands an in person exam to properly make a plan. All the best.

Hello,

	Thank you for the question.  I actually had a patient with a fairly similar belly button recently.  The main procedure in this case would be a small incision at where the belly button meets the abdominal skin.  Through this incision the belly button stalk is opened and a suture is placed to pull the belly button top deep toward the abdominal wall.  This is an umbilicoplasty.  A belly button hernia on the other hand is when the abdominal wall is weak and some of the tissue from inside the abdomen enters the belly button stalk.  Both can cause this appearance but treatment is a little different from one source to the other.
