It is not unusual to adjust permanent restorations after they are seated in the mouth.  If there is a lot of adjustment required, it's best to do it before the cementation, however, if it's just a finite amount that needs adjustment, adjusting the crown after it's permanently seated is okay.  This being said, it is extremely important that your occlusion (bite) feels right, otherwise you could end up with irreversible pulpitis (inflammation of your nerve), and might need a root canal.  You can also break the teeth, or restorations.  I would recommend going back to your dentist and making sure you leave with a good bite.

The new crowns should have felt pretty good when they were initially placed. I usually schedule patients back for an occlusal adjustment when they are not numb but I complete the majority of the adjustments at the time the crowns are initially placed. Before the crowns are cemented they are checked to make sure the bite is very close to the final bite. It sounds like your bite may have been incorrect during the impression phase which would lead to the extreme adjustments you've mentioned.  I would give your dentist another chance to explain why your teeth are not fitting correctly and asking what is going to be done to fix it. Adjusting the lower teeth is not a good solution. A good dentist will get things right for you in a timely manner.Hank D. Michael, DMD
