Hello! I recently had a very experienced PS refuse to do a BA on me due to my scoliosis. He stated that the asymmetry of my breasts will only be more pronounced and I will risk further back/neck/head pain (I am looking for 425cc). I do have a mild deformity of my spine and ribcage, and had surgery as a kid to place a rod. I have seen several PS and none of them refused surgery - until now! Thanks so much for your time and advice! :)
Answer: Scoliosis and breast augmentation Having scoliosis doesn't affect a breast augmentation, and certainly doesn't contribute to any complications. I think the asymmetry in your chest wall may make obtaining breast symmetry and breast shape more difficult, but that's difficult to say without a full exam and photos. You already have seeked additional opinions with surgeons that are willing to do it, so I don't think there's an issue here.

Answer: Scoliosis and breast augmentation Without photos, there is really no way to give you good feedback. Generally, scoliosis is not a contraindication for breast enhancement. In reality, this is very common and something that we see very often in our patients to varying degrees. A skilled breast surgeon will often use implant sizers and asymmetric sizes to create more symmetry after surgery. But, this can be challenging depending upon your degree of asymmetry. I encourage you to consult with Plastic Surgeons who specialize in both primary as well as secondary breast enhancement surgery and find someone that you feel comfortable with.I hope that helps and wish you the very best!-Gregory A Buford MD FACSBoard Certified Plastic Surgeon and Author

Answer: Scoliosis complications post-breast augmentation? Online consultants will not be a good resource for you when it comes to specific advice. Having said that, there is nothing in your description that makes me think that you will not do well with breast augmentation surgery. Generally speaking, patients with scoliosis are able to undergo breast augmentation surgery safely/successfully. Although "absolute symmetry" is rarely achieved, improved breast symmetry is usually achievable. My best advice: select your plastic surgeon carefully. Make sure that he/she has significant experience achieving the types of outcomes you will be pleased with. Then, communicate your goals carefully, as well. Working together you will come up with a good plan to achieve your goals. If you continue to have concerns or questions, seeking consultation with a well experienced spine specialist may also be helpful. Best wishes.

Answer: Scoliosis and breast augmentation Thanks for your question about your doctor not wishing to do you breast augmentation I'm sure you are used to the comment that without photos and an exam we really can't give you very precise advice. Part of the equation is after your spinal correction has everything remained stable? Do you have some degree of chronic back pain now, what sports, job, or recreation do you do. All of these questions are part of the puzzle to help an individual patient decide with their surgeon what is the best operation for you. Maybe the doctor you saw might be comfortable with a more conservative augmentation as an example. Remember that we want you to look fabulous as long as we aren't creating some different problem that wasn't anticipated. Get a couple more consults with board certified Plastic surgeons to see what their comfort zones are with your desires, just remember to listen for "good advice" not just what you hoped to hear. You want your surgeon to look out for your best interests and best health options.

Answer: Breast augmentation and scoliosis Good morning and thank you for your important question. A careful evaluation for sources of potential asymmetry should be a part of any preoperative discussion prior to breast augmentation. Spinal curvature and chest wall asymmetry can certainly contribute to asymmetry following the procedure and should be reviewed. However, although these issues are not corrected by breast augmentation, they are also not contraindications to the procedure and a beautiful result can still be achieved. I wish you the best!
