Areola red and lumpy following breast reduction (Photo)

Question

Please help! This is my second breast reduction. I had my first 10 years ago and 6 months ago. I included an implant this time around. A couple of weeks after surgery i got a severe infection which took over a month to get rid of and left a huge scar. My question: i am now noticing one areola is red and lumpy and chipping away at the brown getting closer to the nipple. I have been treated by led light for the scarring and was wondering if its causing this or is it something that will go?

Thank you for your query. This appears to be hypertrophic scarring, which is not uncommon and may need a steroid injection. I routinely advise silicone gel strips, massage and steroid creams to prevent this from happening, and these usually help.  Do discuss your concerns with your Plastic surgeon who should be able to help you. All the best!

You are developing hypertrophic scarring. Please go back to your surgeon for treatment, even Kenalog injections.

As you mentioned a recent infection I encourage you to contact your surgeon to discuss your concerns.  She/He is most familiar with the details of your surgery and how you've been progressing through recovery.  Your surgeon needs to be aware of changes and concerns that you have.

Considering your history, I think you should be keeping close contact with your provider.
Breast infections with implants in place are pretty serious.
If the implant is contaminated, it absolutely needs to be removed.
It’s really difficult to make an assessment without having complete information.
My best recommendation is you keep close follow up with your provider. 
If you’re not getting the care you need from your provider, then consider getting an in person second opinion consultation from another provider.
