In Aug 2015 I had laparascopic surgery for a severe hiatal hernia. About a month after the surgery I suddenly noticed a prominent " ridge-line" running directly between my sternum and navel when I went to sit up. My surgeon said recently that the diastasis recti and the surgery are unrelated, and that it is due to my weight -- 5ft 9in 205lb. What would have caused this if not the surgery?
Answer: Diastiasis recti I am so sorry that you are experiencing this, but I don't think it has anything to do with your surgery. But is related to your weight. Try to take a bit of the excess off with a reasonable eating plan and exercise. It will definitely improve your bulge. Best, Dr. Nazarian

Answer: Diastasis Recti in a Male Hello, thank you for your question and photo. Haital hernia and diastasis recti are two different things, although there are haital repair issues that can effect Diastasis recti. I recommend you contact your primary care physician and surgeon to be evaluated. I suggest they do diagnostic tests such as an MRI to determine what is happening in your body. Sometimes genetic issues can cause laxity in their tissues which can lead to a diastasis recti. Pressure from intra-abdominal fat can also cause this to occur. It is best to follow up with your physician and pursue diagnostics to determine what your next step will be. Best wishes to you!#diastasisrecti #haitalhernia #male

Answer: Diastasis Recti in a Male Its unlikely that your laparoscopic surgery caused the diastasis if it was uncomplicated. Weight, and more particularly intra-abdominal fat that puts pressure on the abdominal wall are more likely causes. Some people have a genetic tendency with more tissue laxity to develop this condition. This is not likely a medical problem, although a good exam or scan to check for hernia should be done. In the absence of a hernia, repair would be for cosmetic purposes.

Answer: I don't understand what caused sudden diastasis recti. Thank you for your question and for sharing your photograph. I can see your area of concern. Diastasis recti is simply a separation of your "6-pack" muscles, without hernia development. This is seen in some men genetically but more commonly in those that have had hernia surgeries in the past or who have undergone a significant amount of weight gain and weight loss. I would first recommend a thorough physical exam by your surgeon to ensure that they ridgeline is not a hernia. Occasionally a CT scan of your abdomen may be required in order to diagnose the diastasis. If this is in fact a diastasis, and you wish to have it repaired, would entail surgery to tighten the muscles back together. Hope that this helps.

Answer: Diastasis Recti Diastasis Recti simply means a separation of the paired midline abdominal muscles also called the Rectus Abdominis muscles. Although not dangerous this condition makes your tummy stick out even if you have good core strength. Paradoxically with greater separation of these muscles, when you try to tense your muscles to tighten your tummy the center part bulges between the separated muscles. Here are some simple ways to determine if you have a significant Diastasis Recti: If you have a midline muscle gap of more than a few finger breadths when you contract your muscles and if you have bulging or protrusion in your midline between your muscles, especially if made worse when you contract your muscles. In my experience the vast majority of women after pregnancy have a Diastasis Recti, the same goes for massive weight gain/loss regardless of sex.You should discuss your options with your surgeon. #diastasisrecti
