Dark bruises after sclerotherapy? (Photos)

Question

I have done a first sclerotherapy treatment 2 days ago and have bruises in the injected area, also I had bleeding right after the injection which took some time for the bleeding to stop so I had to wait at the doctor office until it stopped. The doctor put some arnica gel before I put the compression stockings and ordered to have them for the next 48 hours. My concern that it is permanent and I will have some pigment. Please advise what to do and should I be worry.

Brusing and some discoloration of the treated areas is not unusual after sclerotherapy.   Arnica can help to speed up recovery of the bruising, so if you don't have any, you can get some over the counter.  Make sure to continue to use your compression stocking as instructed.  I also recommend avoidance of direct sun exposure to minimize risk of discoloration. You should see improvement over the next several weeks.  If you have more concerns, make sure to follow up with your treating physician.

We explain to patients that these are abnormal veins in the first place and they invariably leak a little blood, which is what those bruises are. I have never seen sclerotherapy without them.

Injection of veins can make the veins look worse before they look better It is common for the veins to look darker or more inflamed after sclerotherapy injections. If the veins are hard and dark and tender, I would recommend seeing your physician back to possibly drain the blood out of the veins so that they do not discolor.  If the veins are just bruised and inflamed, give it time for the veins to go away.

Localized bruising and pigmentation at the injection site is commonly seen after sclerotherapy. It is often a result of inflammation from the sclerosant agent and very temporary in nature (usually clearing up in 6-12 weeks). Rare persistence can occur for a small number of patients up to 1-year post-treatment. If it worsens or shows no signs of improvement over several weeks, I'd follow up for an evaluation with your physician.

Bruising after sclerotherapy is not uncommon. Remember the treated areas will always look ugly before its get better. It generally takes about 6 weeks for it to completely heal. If you are still concerned please go back and see your provider.

This is quite normal and will resolve in a few weeks. You should expect bruising anytime you are punctured by a needle. I suggest asking for a copy of your consent anytime you have a procedure as the risks and side effects should be included on any proper informed consent. Also ask for a copy of your post procedure instructions, and I would bet that your doctor addressed bruising as a normal and expected occurrence with sclerotherapy.

Although you seem to have had a lot of bruising post sclerotherapy this is not abnormal.  You are only 2 days post treatment and the bruising usually worsens over a few days before improving.  Compression and applying a topical cream such as dermaka should help.  Follow up with your treating physician.

Hi and thank you for your question. I recommend that you follow up with your provider vein specialist and let him re-evaluate you if you are concerned. Specialist will decide the best approach to continue with your care. Bleeding right after the sclerotherapy treatment is considered normal and it can be more prominent if the patient is taking any medication or supplement that makes the blood thinner. Some general recommendations include the use of medical compression stocking for a week during the day, and also protecting from the sun for 4 weeks after sclerotherapy treatment. Appearance of the areas treated might look worse before looking better and it can take about 6 weeks until results can be seen. It is usually expected at least 50-75% improvement of the overall appearance with each treatment. Most patients may need between 2 to 6 treatments.

Bruising is very normal and typical after sclerotherapy. It is not permanent and could take several months to go away . It is normal for veins to get dark and ugly before they get better.
