I have factor V Leiden heterozygous and would like to have a tummy tuck with smart lipo. Is this even possible with the risk of blood clots? Is it safe?
Answer: Factor V leiden and tummy tuck Most patients with Factor V Leiden deficiency are still candidates for tummy tuck surgery. Unless you have a history of DVT, you probably do not need any special treatment. I have had several patients with this condition present for tummy tuck surgery. I send them first to the cardiologists who happen to be located upstairs in our building to have them cleared for surgery. (Getting cleared by a hematologist is even better.) For the patients that I have treated, I have never had an issue and have not changed any part of my peri-operative protocol as a result of their condition. I still think that it is good to have a hematology expert give their blessing for surgery however, because every patient is different.

Answer: Blood disorders do not necessarily rule out any elective abdominoplasty. I agree with the opinions already listed. I think the operation is safe but should be done with the advise and consent of the surgeon as well as the hematologist.

Proper management starts with dialogue with your hematologist detailing the procedure to be performed. Management then can be collaborated between the plastic surgeon and the hematologist to maximize your safety.
