Why have my areolas become Itchy and numb after my breast reduction surgery?

I'm 8 weeks post-op after breast reduction surgery. I am extremely happy with my results. However, my areolas have become very itchy and at times flaky. Is it normal at this stage or could it be from the sweat from my workouts? Also, one areola almost feels numb. Should I be worried?

From what you are describing, it sounds on par with normal healing.Itchiness is normal and could be due to the nerves or simply due to your skin being dry.  Numbness is not uncommon after the procedure and the majority of patients will regain their sensitivity.I would contact your plastic surgeon just to confirm what I have stated here.Hope that helps.

Dear sluvvsurgeons,numbness is very common. It depends on the operation but often times sensation can return in a couple of weeks, a year, or not at all.  Nipple sensation itself is very important and can sometimes be lost with breast surgery. This is often mentioned in the risks of the consent process. I imagine your numbness is just temporary although I would have to examine you.Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS

Itchiness and flakiness following a breast reduction are quite common so there is no need to worry. Numbness can be present and typically improves/resolves with time. You may need to give this a year to two to know what the final sensation level will be.  You may just want to review these issues with your surgeon as well.Steven Turkeltaub, MD
