Breast reduction incision has opened and a stitch is sticking out 2 weeks post op, should I be concerned? (Photo)

Question

I am not too concerned about the incision opening itself, it's not infected, no more drainage, no odor, etc. however I remember reading that if there is a visible stitch it could delay healing and cause complications. I canceled my appt with my surgeon because I think it looks fine and it's already healing, but is the visible stitch concerning?

Dear meryllee,this is a wound dehiscence and it can occur after breast lift. I would suggest you to keep your wound clean. Also, it would be the best to consult your plastic surgeon and check whether the suture should be removed.Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS

An open area at the T is not uncommon, and suture spitting is sometimes an issue with breast reduction as well. Your surgeon is your best resource to handle these healing concerns and unless you are very confident it might be best to keep the appointment you arranged.

In most cases, it is better to remove a sutures to allow for faster healing but this should be decided by your surgeon.
