Removal of cheek implants?

Question

Hi. I am considering cheek implants but considering EVERY scenario. Say I got implants that were too large and removed/ replaced them, would I experience sagging? What if I had well sized implants but disliked them later on in 15+ years would there be significant sagging? Could I have fat/filler or a facelift if there is sagging?

I have not seen sagging develop after removal of cheek implants.  If there was some sagging present before the cheek implants were placed, this could return after the implants were removed.  Cheek implants normally add volume to the face and are not a primary treatment to help with sagging of the face.  A facelift can be done in someone with cheek implants or in someone after cheek implants are removed.

Hello Rainbowsunshinee and thank you for your question. Many people experience midface volume loss with aging or just want more fullness in their cheeks. Cheek implants come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and can even be customized to give you the exact amount of augmentation you desire. If you later change your mind or want a change in size, they can be easily removed or switched out for a different size implant with an experienced facial plastic surgeon. If you did experience any unwanted loss in face volume or laxity after removal you could definitely still receive other treatments such as filler, fat transfer, or skin/soft tissue tightening procedures including facelift.

It is reasonable to assume that some sagging will occur with cheek implant removal. It may not as there are many factors involved that can contribute to its occurrence such as cheek implant style and size as well your natural cheek shape/anatomy. But because placement of cheek implants, by definition, requires detachment of some of the osteocutaneous ligaments and the implant serves as a spacer so the soft tissues can float on top of it, it is easy to imagine when it is removed how some cheek sagging can occur. But it is a treatable issue should it arise in the advent you desire cheek implant removal.

Cheek implants are manufactured in a large array of thicknesses, sizes, and shapes which is best determined at the time of the consultation and examination.  They can also be custom carved to match patient's unique anatomy in the mid-face.  In our practice, cheek implants  are usually placed under a brief general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure through an intra-oral approach. The implants can be removed at any time, usually in the office under local anesthesia
