Good question. I just had a patient last week ask me a similar question. After conferring with our Anesthesia colleagues and the prescribing provider- our protocol is that if this medication is taken sporadically, then the patient must be off this medication for 2 weeks prior to surgery. However, if the medication is taken daily and is a long-term medication, the patient may stay on it as sudden cessation may result in withdrawal symptoms. We always clear this with the patient's prescribing physician and the anesthesiologist to make sure we have a unified plan. Communication is the key when patients have other medical concerns.
This may matter in relation to your overall health and is better properly evaluated by your surgeon and anesthesiologist. Kenneth Hughes, MD Los Angeles, CA
If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, there are some risks, as adderall in an amphetamine. Whether or not those are issues, you would do well to ask your surgeon to contact the anesthesia provider for specific advice. Some will ask for one or two days off the adderall, others up to two weeks. All the best.
