This 54 year old female mother desired to rid herself of the excess skin she was experiencing. She was interested in a breast lift and removal of excess abdominal tissue. She had been considering the procedures for about 8 years. Mastopexy refers to lifting and reshaping of the breast. The operation involves rearranging the breast tissue, shifting the nipple position and increasing the breast firmness by tightening the skin. The excess skin and fat in the lower stomach area that hangs below the belt line is called the pannus, or abdominal "apron," and can have several negative affects on one’s quality of life. The extra fold or folds of skin can hinder hygiene, put stress on the back, and make everyday activities difficult. Often, the areas in the pubic region under the pannus can become moist as perspiration is trapped. This can cause rashes, skin ulcers, and odor. Clothing may not fit comfortably, and, if severe, even simple activities such as standing and walking can become difficult. Because of this, Dr. Pousti recommended a stage 3 breast lift and panniculectomy procedure to remove the excess tissue. She is currently 1 1/2 years post-op.
