Kybella vs Cool Mini: Which Treatment Is Best For Neck Contouring?

Kybella, which was recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of excess fat under the chin, has claimed to have less downtime and expense than traditional liposuction for the neck or underneath the chin. Due to its growing popularity as a more favorable option to cosmetic surgery, other similar products have popped up on the market. One such option is the Cool Mini by CoolSculpting. Like Kybella, the Cool Mini was recently approved by the FDA for treating excess fat cells under the chin, giving patients additional options to get rid of their double chins.

How Does KYBELLA and Cool Mini Work?

Kybella is a patented synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps metabolize fat. The injection of Kybella disrupts the fat cell membrane, causing the fat cell to release its fatty contents, which the body then metabolizes like normal. This process reduces the amount of fat in the area injected, thus reducing the appearance of a “double chin.”

Cool Mini works similarly by having the patient rest their chin in a device that freezes the fat cell, causing the cell wall to tear. Though the fat cell is frozen, the skin and surrounding tissues are kept at a safe temperature. The broken fat cells will eventually thaw after the treatment, however the fluids inside them are digested and released by the body.

Both Kybella and Cool Mini require multiple treatments, typically between two and four. Currently, both are only approved for use in the chin area, however I think this may change soon, allowing Kybella especially to be used on other areas of the body. It's important to note that though these options are considered non-surgical, there can be swelling and, as a result, a minimal amount of downtime.

Which Option Is Right For Me?

RealSelf users have rated Cool Mini and Kybella. As of March 2015, users gave Cool Mini a 75% Worth It rating and Kybella 100%. I offer Kybella at my practice and I've been extremely pleased with the results. For patients who don't want to undergo expensive surgery with a lengthy recovery time, I think it's a great option. With just a few short treatments, a patient can see a significant reduction in fat under the chin.
