Botox not for lip plumping

Arnold R. Oppenheim, MD answers: Can you Botox lips to get a plumper lip?

Is Botox ok for lip plumping? I want fuller lips and I've heard the most about Botox.

No. Fillers are used exclusively. Hyaluronic acid fillers ( Juvederm, Restylane) have pretty much replaced the older collagen fillers. Although, I and some other physicians still like the firmness of Cosmoderm to line the vermillion border (the junction between the lip and skin). Actually, the FDA came down hard on the Collagen Corporation some years ago for at one time recommending lip injections.

I agree with the others in being sure that your injector is skilled. I am sure you have seen some of the famous celebrities and their buffoonish lips. ( Does the National Enquirer pay LA plastic surgeons under the table to create these duck bills, sausages, Homer Simpsons etc. in order to hep up circulation?)

Botox can be used judiciously in the area around the lips. This creates smoothness and helps with the "smokers lines". Limited units and perfect placement is crucial otherwise the dreaded drool.

In addition putting Botox into the area just lateral to the tip of the nasal alar (where the side bows out) can help decrease the gummy smile. This lowers the lip. Again, careful placement is key or you could develop the Dick Chaney sneer.
