Danger !!!! Danger !!!
In November of 2023 after extensive research regarding cosmetic surgery, and in particular Face Lift, neck lift, upper and lower blepharoplasty, I came across what seemed to be a reputable company called Beauty In Prague, hereby known as BIP.
I filled in online forms and was subsequently contacted by BIP who passed my details to the surgeon with whom they are associated, Dr Kulhanek
I was reassured this surgeon was a good surgeon and that the facilities were top class. They also included videos of testimonies, and after more research I did not find anything contraindicating this clinic or surgery,
I made a booking and then proceeded to make my own travel and accommodation arrangements and conduct fitness and blood tests to ascertain my eligibility.
I arrived in Prague the day before my surgery and was not very confident with continuing with the procedure as the weekend before I had gone to dinner with my family and was burnt on the lip, something that was looking as if it was becoming a cold-sore, contraindicated for surgery due to the potential danger involved.
As such I emailed the BIP several times that I would like to cancel or reschedule due to my reservations. . I also made several attempts at contacting the clinic directly, without success as my texts and calls were not getting through.
On the day of the surgery I was woken by a call from reception that the driver was downstairs, this is when I realise that my calls, texts and emails were not getting through. I decided to visit the surgeon to consult and perhaps rearrange the procedure.
Upon entering the clinic I voiced my frustrations at not being able to contact anyone on the numbers provided, but the secretaries told me that it is because BIP does not take calls till 8 am.
My consult with the Surgeon, Dr Kulhanek lasted all of 6 minutes and upon voicing my concerns regarding my possible cold sore, he concluded that it is quite possibly simply a burn and stress. I was exhausted but the surgeon was very convincing and reassuring so I agreed to go through with the procedure.
After the consult the receptionist approached me and told me that the surgeon had indicated for a neck lift too, but that I had not been billed for it. I motioned to the email sent which stated the platysmas muscle was included in the price initially quoted in November, but they made it look like it was a misunderstanding, as if the people who booked the procedures ( BIP ) perhaps had not understood, and under the duress and stress involved I had no other choice that to forfeit another 1100 GBP for a procedure they had told me was included.
After this I was evaluated medically and was deemed fit and healthy to undergo surgery. This is where the real challenges started.
As the day progressed, I was ushered into the surgical rooms and realised no-one spoke English. It was 3 pm by the time I was led into surgery proper.
What happened next belongs in the pages of a horror movie.
When I woke up I was completely naked and shaking, it took ta good while for someone to provide some dignity in the form of a small frayed duvet and later on an electric blanket.
No-one spoke English and the bed was absolutely flat, no head raised, as is indicated and paramount in procedures like ours, I was just flopped on a bed until someone came to take a look at me and raise the head.
During the evening I began to bleed profusely. The nurses changed my bedding several times, but it was evident there was a medical incident at hand and the sheets and pillows where being soaked with blood. I asked to see a doctor but was told that they had all gone home. Eventually the bleeding was so extreme they called the surgeon at home. This was approximately 1am or thereabouts on the 9th of January 2024.
Instead of offering me medical assistance the surgeon instructed the nurse to stem the bleeding by compressing as hard as possible using multiple compresses.
The nurse proceeded to bind my head and neck so tightly that I choked to the point I vomited, I still have the scars from the ligature that was created and that eventually acted as a garrotte that nearly choked me. The ligature was so tight it popped blood vessels in my eyes and turned my cheek black. The bleeding was still severe and instead of calling for more help, they simply bound my head even further. I spent the whole night in fear of loosing my life, holding the bandages on my head tightly in an attempt to stump the bleeding. The bleeding was so extreme it was running like a tap down both my shoulders.
In the morning the surgeon came to see me and cut the dressings and with scissors, also cutting half my hair off and laughing whilst he did so. At no point was there mention of a ‘Drain’ as is expected in procedures like this, and when mentioned to the surgeon he stated that he does not follow this protocol.
As the day progressed the heavy bleeding stopped. Later, as expected the blood started to pool into my head and neck, the pressure was absolutely insufferable, but after a day of observations they discharged me to my hotel room.
Oddly enough on the 11th of January I received a phone call from BIP asking me when I wanted to reschedule my procedure ?.
On Friday the 12th of January I personally attended the clinic without appointment as I was worried about the amount of blood pooling in my neck. I also requested another compression garment as my own was saturated with blood. I was informed that there was no surgeon on Fridays and as for the garment, I was to simply wash the old one.
Subsequently the back of my neck began to extremely swell up and I attempted to contact the clinic on the numbers provided, again unsuccessfully, so I tried to contact the clinic via mail explaining my predicament.
Eventually the swelling was so server it was blocking my airways and I was dispatched to the AE dept of Hospital Na Františku Prague. Here they took images of the extent of damage that had been done.
In hospital they drained the haematomas, as they were blocking my airways, and eventually they placed drains. They also made an attempt to admit me for observations as by this time my blood levels indicated I was anaemic from the extensive blood loss.
I had no other option other than to extend my stay in Prague for at least another 9 days as I was unfit for travel and required further medical assistance.
On Monday the 15th I was escorted to the clinic where the surgeon, Dr Kulhanek prematurely removed the drains placed at the hospital that provided relief, which led to more haematomas that needed further medical attention.
When I confronted the surgeon, Dr Kulhanek, about everything, he did not deny what had happened, ie the bleeding, the strangulation, the cutting of my hair, but denied the fact he had not placed drains. As a precautionary step due to the state of my condition I began to record conversations with the surgeon. In these recordings it can be confirmed he did not deny all that has been stated above. In the event these are required they are at your disposal.
That same day, the 15th of January 2024 at reception the nurses asked me again and again when they can book a taxi to the airport and although it was merely a handful of hours after my attendance in A&E, they issued a ‘Medical Report’ in an attempt to discharge me, even though it had been indicated by the hospital that I should be hospitalised for observation.
I felt that their only concern was to be rid of me. Furthermore as I was experiencing continued difficulties in contacting someone I requested an emergency number from BIP but was simply sent generic emails with the same numbers.
When I was strong enough on the 17th of Jan 2024, I sent emails to both BIP and the clinic about what had happened. BIP replied an entire day later, only to confirm that they are sending my email to the surgeon to ask him what has happened.
No further attempts to communicate with me where made till the 22nd of January, where BIP rep Tamara, sent an email and an sms asking me about a taxi to the airport. At this point I have to reiterate that I was never away from my hotel room, my phone was on and I was expecting at least some support or help, instead I felt I was treated with contempt. Not once did the clinic or the surgeon, Dr Kulhanek, ever contact me, call me or email, regardless of however many attempts I made to get in contact.
In an attempt to treat the ongoing issue of my health and the haematoma and swelling I attempted to make my way to the clinic from my hotel room, which was conveniently situated across the street, and was seen 3 more times by various members of staff who drained the haematoma again and again at my insistence. At no point did they offer this and it was at my insistence that the drain was done. Although their Medical report they issued on the 15th of January states there were no further complications I did managed to retain the appointment cards that I asked for, contradicting their Medical Report that all was well. I did have one final appointment with the clinic on the 22nd of January, but was unable to attend as I was found passed out on my bathroom floor and was unfit to go. I let them know about this.
On the 23nd of January members of my family came to evacuate me from Prague. My emails and continued attempts at communicating with the clinic and the surgeon still go answered.
As I write this it is the 24th of January and I have still yet to hear from the Surgeon, Dr Kulhanek, or the clinic, regarding why the complications occurred, nor was I ever offered an explanation nor any solutions, other than the ones I pursued, insisted and pressured for. Indeed their only concern was to be rid of me.
I have incurred great expenses, having to re-book flights and book further accommodation, as well as expenses such as medical gauzes, creams, pills and other sundries, none of which the clinic offered to provide in assistance.
If you are thinking of attending this surgeon or this clinic, I beg you re-consider and value your LIFE. I really do believe I came in grave danger and would never desire for any other living being to undergo the hell and torture I endured.
