Butched for Life

I have known dr chang for at least 6 years. I treated my varicose veins with it and was quite happy with the results.

In 2021 I had a "non-invasive" aesthetic treatment called Coolsculpting, in another facility, and I had an adverse result/complications (Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia) which forced me to look for a reconstructive surgeon to reverse the damage. Among these doctors I visited the well-known Dr. John W.Chang. I asked him if he had experience treating people with PAH and he said he has. Among many other questions, I asked him if he could transfer fat from one place to another on my body, since Coolsculpting had also left indentations on my legs. He told me that he could not reuse my fat because it was all compromised but that it was not necessary because the result of the lipo would be to my liking.

I trusted him, like the time he operated on my veins, so I booked the surgery (which he divided into 3 sessions, 3 different days, for the different parts of the body that had also been treated with Coolsculpting and thus avoid future surprises.

The surgeries were performed on February 25, 2022 (legs), February 28, 2022 (love handles, stomach), and March 8, 2022 (arms, bra fat, front and back). All very painful surgeries as they were performed with injections of local anesthetics and laughing gas.
I was conscious during all three procedures and they will feel like torture. At the end of each of these sessions, all the wounds remained open, no sutures, and after short recovery intervals, they bandaged me, dressed me in the girdle, and sent me home. After the last session of the three lipos, days later I called the Soluna MD clinic to complain about some irregularities that were bothering me (seromas), and he received me again (May 1, 2022), saying that they were not a big deal, normal. He took pictures of me again, and sent me home.

There was never a concern on his part to make a review appointment, or follow up. I had to ask him to please attend to me, even though I was still very swollen, he saw me and said that everything was fine (May 24, 2022). This was the last time I saw him.

The months went by, and after having taken all the care to have a good recovery and results, I began to notice that my legs were worse than when I arrived for the first consultation about a repairing lipo. As you can see in the photographs that I attached, the indentations were even more noticeable since Dr. Chang removed much more fat from my thighs than was necessary, leaving deformities that were difficult to correct. More fat than necessary was also removed from my arms and stomach, producing sagging skin and irregularities. Since then I have been consulting with different surgeons to try to reverse this situation. I had two other reparative surgeries but nothing is enough because there is no where to remove more body fat to move to these points where there is a deficit and loss of the natural contour of my body.

Apart from ruining my figure, the doctor has refused to give me my medical records, making the palliative treatment and correction of the damage caused by his surgeries even more difficult. I repeatedly called his head nurse and surgical coordinator Aelin, who has not cooperated at all with the release of my surgical history. On one occasion she told me that it was not possible to give me a report because the physical record of the three procedures was never made. Is this acceptable? How is this possible? Well, I asked for the before and after photos, and they weren't given to me either. I got tired of calling them. Now I count on his help to get more information about my medical records. It is my right, as a person and as a client.

I've known Dr. Chang for over six years, during which he successfully treated my varicose veins, yielding satisfactory results. In 2021, seeking aesthetic enhancement through a "non-invasive" procedure called Coolsculpting at a different facility led to unexpected complications—Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH). Consequently, I embarked on a quest to find a reconstructive surgeon to rectify the damage. Among the practitioners I consulted, I turned to Dr. John W. Chang.

During my consultation with Dr. Chang, I inquired about his experience in addressing PAH, to which he assured me of his proficiency. Among various other queries, I sought information about the feasibility of fat transfer to rectify indentations caused by Coolsculpting on my legs. Dr. Chang informed me that reusing my compromised fat wasn't necessary, as the liposuction procedure he proposed would yield satisfactory results.

Having previously entrusted Dr. Chang with my medical needs, including vein surgery, I proceeded to schedule the corrective surgery. This multi-session process, split across three different days, aimed to address the various body parts affected by Coolsculpting and prevent any unwelcome surprises in the future.

The surgical procedures took place on February 25, 2022 (legs), February 28, 2022 (love handles, stomach), and March 8, 2022 (arms, bra fat, front, and back). These operations, executed with local anesthetics and nitrous oxide for pain management, were notably uncomfortable and at times distressing. Throughout all three procedures, I remained conscious, and the absence of sutures resulted in open wounds. After brief recovery periods, the wounds were dressed, and I was fitted with a compression garment before being discharged.

Following the completion of the three liposuction sessions, I experienced concerns (seromas) that prompted me to contact the Soluna MD clinic in May 1, 2022. Dr. Chang reviewed my condition and dismissed the issues as normal, capturing images for reference. Despite my swelling, a follow-up was only arranged upon my insistence on May 24, 2022. Regrettably, this marked the final encounter with Dr. Chang.

In the subsequent months, despite my diligent recovery efforts, it became evident that the condition of my legs had worsened since my initial consultation for corrective liposuction. Attached photographs corroborate this progression, revealing heightened indentations due to an excessive fat removal approach on my thighs. Similarly, my arms and stomach suffered from overzealous fat removal, resulting in skin sagging and irregular contours. To remedy this situation, I've sought consultation from various surgeons, and while I've undergone additional reparative surgeries, the absence of suitable fat reserves for transfer limits the extent of correction possible.

Beyond the physical distress, I've encountered resistance in obtaining my medical records from Dr. Chang's clinic. My attempts to acquire my surgical history through his head nurse and surgical coordinator, Aelin, have been met with uncooperative behavior. Astonishingly, it was asserted that no physical record existed for the procedures. Consequently, I've been denied access to both before-and-after photos. This lack of transparency and cooperation led me to seek your assistance in obtaining my rightfully owned medical records—a privilege I hold as an individual and client.

I've known Dr. Chang for over six years, during which he successfully treated my varicose veins, yielding satisfactory results.
In the year 2021, I underwent a "non-invasive" aesthetic procedure called Coolsculpting at a different facility. Unfortunately, I experienced adverse effects, specifically Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH), which compelled me to search for a reconstructive surgeon to rectify the damage. Among the specialists I consulted was the renowned Dr. John W. Chang. During our discussions, I inquired about his experience with treating PAH cases, to which he confirmed his familiarity. I also probed him about the possibility of fat transfer to rectify indentations caused by Coolsculpting on my legs. He explained that due to compromised fat, reusing it wasn't feasible, but assured me of a satisfying outcome through liposuction.
Based on the trust I had developed in him from previous experiences, particularly the vein operation, I proceeded to schedule the surgery. Dr. Chang divided the procedure into three sessions spanning different days: February 25, 2022 (legs), February 28, 2022 (love handles, stomach), and March 8, 2022 (arms, bra fat, front and back). These surgeries were notably uncomfortable, administered with local anesthetics and nitrous oxide. I was conscious throughout, enduring what felt like arduous procedures. Following each session, the wounds were left open, devoid of sutures. After a brief recovery, I was bandaged and fitted with a girdle before being discharged. Subsequently, I contacted the Soluna MD clinic after the third session to express concerns about irregularities (seromas). Dr. Chang attended to me again on May 1, 2022, reassuring me that these issues were common and not cause for major concern. After capturing more images, he sent me home.
Regrettably, there was no initiative from Dr. Chang's end to arrange a follow-up or review appointment. It was upon my insistence that he agreed to see me again on May 24, 2022. This marked the final time I encountered him.
As months passed, despite adhering to post-operative care for optimal recovery and results, I observed a deterioration in the condition of my legs, which were now in a worse state than before I embarked on the journey of repairing liposuction. The attached photographs exemplify the pronounced indentations resulting from Dr. Chang's extensive fat removal from my thighs, leading to deformities that proved challenging to rectify. Additionally, the excessive fat removal from my arms and stomach resulted in sagging skin and irregularities. In an attempt to address this, I sought consultations with multiple surgeons, undergoing two corrective surgeries. However, the challenges persist as there is limited viable fat to be transferred to the affected areas without compromising my body's natural contours.
Beyond the physical consequences, the matter of acquiring my medical records has compounded my predicament. Dr. Chang has declined to release my records, hindering the pursuit of palliative measures and correction for the aftermath of his surgeries. Despite my repeated outreach to his head nurse and surgical coordinator, Aelin, there has been a lack of cooperation in providing access to my surgical history. On one occasion, it was even conveyed that physical records for the procedures were never established, a perplexing revelation. Furthermore, my requests for before-and-after photos were denied. Frustrated with the lack of responsiveness, I had asked the help of Florida Health Department to investigate the reason Soluna MD is denying me access to my medical records.
