Infection in reconstructed breast after dental cleaning. (photo)

Question

I had my teeth cleaned ten day ago (simple semiannual cleaning). Four days after my cleaning, one of my breasts (with silicone implant, post-mastectomy) began to feel very hot. I've had my implants now for ten months. In the days that followed, it became red, very swollen, and sore. I contacted my PS, who put me on Clindamycin (300 mg, 3x's day) two day ago, but I've not noticed much of a difference in symptoms yet. Could anyone tell me what I might anticipate in resolving this infection?

Unfortunately, it seems likely that you have an infection. You should be seen by your plastic surgeon to do an in person evaluation, take your vital signs, and obtain lab work. These studies/data will be more helpful in deciding what treatment plan is right for you...whether that is a higher delivery of antibiotics or whether that is removing your implant. This time can be overwhelming and you should see your plastic surgeon so you and her/him can speak about your options and make the best plan for you. Good luck!

I would recommend seeing your doctor in order to attain a proper prognosis for your symptoms. It is very likely that this may very well be infections, which in this case you will need a thorough evaluation from your surgeon in order to asses your plans for treatment. Good luck.

You need to be seen by your doctor to be properly evaluated to see if this is improving or not,. If the oral antibiotics do not help, then you may need IV antibiotics or even removal of the implant.

If the breast implant is infected, antibiotics alone will rarely if ever will salvage the implant.You need to be seen in person, examination, blood work and possibly MRI to make a diagnosis and then plan the proper treatment.

I think that you need to have an ultrasound.  I have had these situations before.  The swelling can be accompanied by redness.  It will be important to evaluate the implant pocket to see if there is fluid building up around it.  Antibiotics will not stop fluid from building up around an implant.  If that is the case your Plastic surgeon will have to help you with a plan.
