I have a yellow scab over my open wound after breast reduction surgery. Is this something I should worry about?

The incisions for breast reduction are fairly long. Minor wound healing issues are occasionally seen but almost always eventuate in a good result with proper one care. Specific problems should be addressed to the plastic surgeon.

 I'm sorry to hear about the complication you have experience. Sometimes these “open wounds” will get a little worse/bigger before they  begin to heal and decrease in size. Your plastic surgeon will be in the best position to advise you; for example sometimes an exposed suture may delay healing. You should have some peace of mind that these types of issues generally improve over the course of the next several weeks. Patients generally end up very pleased with the results of the breast reduction surgery. Best wishes.

Not necessarily.  You should, of course, remain in contact with your own plastic surgeon as he or she will best be able to help you through this period.It is actually pretty common to have areas that open up - and then close on their own - after procedures such as these.  Applying Neosporin is okay if your plastic surgeon has advised you to do so.  I usually advise my patients to let these areas dry up on their own and only apply ointment (I usually suggest Aquaphor) once the wound has closed.It can take a while - like a few weeks - but it should close up on its own, and with relatively few advise effects.I hope that this helps and good luck,Dr. EMember of RealSelf 100
