Any surgeries to fix uneven trapezius muscles? (Photo)

Question

I'm a 19 year old female and just started having this problem and it's been effecting my self esteem I already have depression so I've been even more insecure than usual, I don't weight lift so I believe I got this imbalance by repetitive strain from a tic I had(not related to working out). I know that Botox can relax muscles but how long would that last? And what are the risks of that and what else could I do instead? would physical therapy work? Or a chiropractor? Here are some pictures of me

Hello there,Thank you for your question.  I have treated many patients in the trapezius muscle to help loosen it up.  A chiropractor, physical therapy and massage are also great options to align everything and help the muscles relax.  I would also recommend acupuncture to help with not only relaxation of muscles but with your tic.  Botox will help for about 3-4 months at a time and works well if the muscle is strained and not relaxing regardless of massages and other body work.  I would start with these options first before thinking of surgery.  The great thing is that from the pictures, there isn't a big difference between the sides.  Hope this helps.All the best,Carlos Mata, MD, MBA, FACSBoard-Certified Plastic Surgeon

It seems that the issue is more your self esteem than your trapezius muscle.  I would stay far away from even considering any form of treatment to correct what you may see.  From a professional standpoint I see no issue with your trapezius even if you feel that one side is larger than the other.  Assymetry is not a problem that necessarily needs correction.  In your case, I would bet that most people don't notice what you are picking up.  I hope this helps.

It is normal to have one side a little more developed. Often if you are right handed you may notice the right side is more developed and vice versa. There is no surgery or treatment for this. If the muscle is in spasm it may appear larger, but this is best treated by a chiropractor.  Best, Dr. M

You have a normally appearing trapezius muscles, one slightly larger than the other which is a NORM.If you don't have any debilitating physical issues, treating your condition with Botox is going to be costly.Good luck from NYC
