Hardness in breast after Breast reduction. Any suggestions?

I will be 4 weeks post op breast reduction tomorrow. My left breast has healed beautifully. My right breast is seeming to take a bit longer to heal but I have noticed that it is very firm to the touch around the area closest to my armpit. Is this hardness normal? I know I'm still very early on in the healing process but I am just curious to know if it's something to be concerned about. Seeing my PS next week. Thanks!

Thank you for your question.Congratulations on undergoing the procedure!  I hope you are as happy as most of my patients are after a breast reduction.You likely have some scar tissue that is built up in that area, and 4 weeks is close to when scar tissue is at its maximum before it starts to slowly settle down.  You may also have some fat that died off and caused some hardening, and that may soften with time as well.  Likely nothing to be concerned about.However, if the area becomes larger, more painful, you get some redness, or you start to have fevers, those would be reasons I would want to see your plastic surgeon sooner than next week. Honestly, it could be any number of things some of which are just part of the healing process and some of which are serious. The only way to know for sure is to be assessed in person. So, I would suggest that you get an appointment to see your surgeon sooner rather later. Best, Dr. Nazarian

This could be an area fat necrosis and scar.  I would massage the area regularly.  Assuming no other symptoms such as fever, chills or redness, it should hopefully get better.  If it is worsening or enlarging, speak to your plastic surgeon earlier, but otherwise let your surgeon know about the area when you see them, so they can properly examine it.  All the best,

Hardness can represent many things including fat necrosis, swelling, hematoma that has solidified, to name a few. Best to be evaluated in person.
