Where are some cheap areas in North Carolina to get a breast reduction?

My insurance won't cover the procedure, even though I've had back pain, neck pain and even saw a chiropractor several times (Blue Cross + Blue Shield problems...). I unfortunately have to pay out of pocket. Whenever I call plastic surgeon offices they never tell me a price unless I go in to talk to them about it. But I can't do that for every surgeon out there. Can anyone give me rough estimates for breast reduction surgery costs in different cities of NC? I'd like my cap limit to be 5k.

Hi.  The cost can vary depending on several factors, so we can typically give a range over the phone, but we will give an exact quote when you come in for the consultation.  I would respectfully suggest though that you not make a decision based on price alone.  I would recommend meeting with a board-certified plastic surgeon to go over the procedure and your options.  I am located in Winston, and we participate with BCBS so I would be happy to meet with you and look into the insurance situation to see if the surgery might be covered. If indeed insurance will not cover this in your case, then I can do this as a cosmetic surgery.  For out of pocket, cosmetic cases, I perform those in our AAAASF certified operating room which helps keep the costs lower for you.  Take care, and good luck.Dr. Howell

Hi, the reason why a plastic surgeon will not give you a price over the phone is because it requires an examination and will vary based on your surgical and medical needs. You might consider contacting your insurance company and going to a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that contracts with them to see if you qualify for insurance coverage (this may require more work such as pictures and calls for authorization). You should take the time to see a couple different Board Certified Plastic Surgeons and get a cost estimate and then make your decision. Thank you for the question. When it comes to costs of surgery, there may be many “variables” involved. The specific surgeon's credentials/experience level (or lack thereof), the specific geographic area you are looking at, the different operations available, the location of the procedure (quality of surgery facility), type/quality of anesthesia provider, insurance company involvement… are some of the potential variables involved.  You will find some average costs of surgery on this website and on individual plastic surgeons' websites as well.
In regards to outcome of the planned procedure, more important than costs of the procedures will be careful selection of your plastic surgeon. I would suggest starting with the American Society of Plastic Surgery and/or the Aesthetic Society of Plastic Surgery to obtain a list of well experienced board-certified plastic surgeons.
Then, I would suggest you visit a few surgeons whose practices concentrate on aesthetic surgery. Ask to SEE lots of examples of their work AND preferably speak/see patients who have had similar procedures done.
Be very careful with your decision-making. You will find, while doing your due diligence, that there are many different “specialties” who will offer their services to you; again, I strongly recommend you concentrate on surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  I would also suggest that you do not base your selection of plastic surgeon primarily on costs of surgery; keep in mind that revisionary surgery may be more costly in many ways. You are in Winston Salem. There are no really "cheap" places to get a breast reduction, but the medical school where you are, Bowman Grey, now Wake Forrest,very.  has a residency program in plastic surgery. Having a procedure by the residents, overseen by the professors, is usually the most inexpensive way to get the procedure and assure that you will get a satisfactory result.
