Good afternoon! As you know, discoid lupus is an extremely photosensitive condition, primarily in the UV range but also to visible light. The pulse dye laser is a visible-light laser (which is why it's so bright). I generally do not treat patients with lupus and related disorders with IPL or visible light lasers for fear of exacerbating their skin disease - but when I do I use remarkably conservative settings. If you do proceed, I would do so with EXTREME CAUTION and make sure your seeing a doctor (not an assistant) with a boatload of experience handling this laser in patients with conditions like yours. The medical literature does have some interesting case reports of lupus treated with Vbeam. However, the risk is that if this laser set off a flare of your DLE, you might end up in a much worse position. Hope that helped and enjoy your weekend.
Agreed, extreme caution is needed if you have lupus. Of note there are cases of rosacea like lupus in the literature. Lupus is part of a family of skin conditions that can Koebner- meaning trauma (like laser or energy devices) can worsen your lupus. Having said that, vascular lasers have been reported to treat the skin signs of lupus. You should see a Specialist who can examine you, and discuss treatment options for your rosacea. I would exhaust all medical treatment of your condition before laser. If laser were to be performed, I would test patch an area to see how your skin reacts, knowing that a test patch is not representative of how the rest of your skin will react. Pulsed dye/vbeam can be used at the same time as fillers. my suggestion is to do it before any neddle injections or before the fillers. best, Dr. Emer.
