Hashimoto's and Breast Implants?

Breast augmentation and breast reconstruction are performed on women with hashimotos often, and many more women with hypothyroidism on synthroid. It is safe to have breast augmentation in this setting and you should do very well.

In the world of medical science, there are no conflicts regarding silicone gel breast implants: There is no peer reviewed published study in legitimate, world renowned journals showing any connection between silicone gel implants and human disease, including autoimmune or connective tissue type disorders. The largest, ongoing prospective trial looking at this is the Adjunct Study. Enrollment started in 1995 and ended in 2006. Since then, 120,000 US women have been followed to date. I think it's important that every women considering or who already have silicone gel breast implants that there are a multitude of indwelling devices made of the same materials as breast implants in people with none of the supposed issues seen with breast implants: testicular implants (first made available in the 1940's(!), facial implants, joint implants for the fingers and wrist, internal stents and shunts, and chronic urinary catheters. Millions of people over 80 years. Not a single mention of autoimmune or connective tissue disorder diseases, or any nefarious illnesses.

I see no reason why breast augmentation with implants could not be performed on well-controlled patients with Hashimoto's. This can be easily confirmed through communication between your surgeon and your endocrinologist. Good luck.

Sorry about your Hashimoto's condition and I understand your confusion about your disease and the decision about getting breasts implants, since the internet is full of contradicting data and opinions. I am a practicing board certified plastic surgeon for over 36 years. I have performed breasts augmentation with saline implants exclusively on over 3000 patients. Only one patient complained about BII like symptoms - fatigue, joints pain etc and requested removal of the breasts implants, which was done. I followed her up for many months and there was no change in her symptoms. If BII was associated with breasts saline implants I would have heard about it from my patients more often. So, based on my experience I would suggest for you to get saline implants as oppose to silicone implants. Obviously , discuss the issue with your endocrinologist as well.
Always, consult with experienced board certified plastic surgeons who operate in accredited surgery center for your safety. Most importantly, check the before and after pictures in the photo gallery, to make sure that they are numerous, consistent and attractive with nice cleavage, perky, symmetrical and natural looking.

There is no data that would suggest breast implants causes or worsens autoimmune diseases. However, if this is a concern then you could consider a fat transfer breast augmentation.

as long as your Hashimoto's is well controlled you should be fine. There have been numerous studies on the safety and efficacy of silicone breast implants. The FDA has approved them to be safe and breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure performed in the United States every year. Implants are much different than they used to be with rigorous testing and cohesive gel. I can't tell you how happy my breast augmentation patients have been with their implants.

Surgery is stress and stress can flair up autoimmune disorders. Many with Hashimoto's have a dairy allergy and I would suggest being checked for food allergies.

You should be able to successfully undergo breast augmentation if your Hashimotos is well controlled. Many women have breast implants who have thyroid conditions. It is important to keep your levels in normal range. I encourage you to discuss your concerns with your surgeon and endocrinologist.
