Question

How long to wait after Botox to start yoga inversion exercises? I had previous instance where I waited 2 weeks after Botox to start trampoline exercise and the toxins migrated and caused partial facial paralysis. Now I am very hesitant to attempt anything and was too scared to do Botox for 4 years. I finally got Botox again 2 months ago but now I really want to start the yoga inversion with a special yoga bench. Can I?

It sounds more like the Botox may have migrated due to poor injection technique. I allow patients to exercise 4 hours after the initial injection. You would want to avoid vigorous exercise for 4 hours after injection to mitigate risk of bruising. You should be able to practice yoga after Botox injections with little to no risk of migration.

It is unlikely that Botox migration is what caused your facial paralysis.  Waiting  24 hours after Botox treatment is generally sufficient in order to resume exercise.  Two months after treatment you should not have any issues related to your Botox injections.

Hi Leanne. Typically you only need to wait 24-48 hours after injections to resume your regular activities, including inversions. After 2 months, there should be no issue at all with you doing inversions.

In my opinion Botox does not migrate no matter what the person does practically immediately after the treatment. I allow my patients to go to the gym the very same day after the treatment approximately two hours later. At the same time we’ve never had a patient who had facial paralysis of any shape or form or any degree. It is my opinion that most of the unwanted muscle weakness occurs from an improper technique. I agree with Dr Grossman, your paralysis was not due to migration but the technique of the injector. This is why it is important to use an expert injector. There are only 2 precautions with Botox. First, you should not do anything very vigorous for several hours to reduce the slight possibility of bruising. Second, if you have Botox just above the eyebrows, you should not rub toward the eyes until the Botox has taken effect. This ism the one place it can migrate, from the forehead through the hole in the fascia that normally separates the forehead from the eyelid area through which the supraorbital artery and nerve travel. This is only possible for a few days to a week and can result in weakness of the muscle that elevates the eyelid. There are no other precautions. You should be able to do your yoga almost immediately.
