Hole/deep tissue wound after breast reduction. Will this heal? (photos)

I got a breast reduction done 2 months ago and I thought it was going well until I went for my post op & found out that I had open area. Immediately, I was confused, lost and depressed. I went from being a nurse to being disabled person in minutes and couldn't care for my self. Would it ever heal? Is this medical malpractice? If I go through another surgery what are the chances of positive result? Does this happen because of contamination & not following sterol procedure? Thank you!

Thank you for your question. I’m sorry you’ve experienced this small skin opening after your breast reduction, but this is a very common problem. You may have “spit a stitch” meaning one of the dissolvable sutures comes to the surface causing skin irritation and a small opening. Rest assured, this will absolutely heal with some basic wound care, should not require further surgery, and you likely won’t see a difference from the surrounding scars. This is not malpractice or because any sterile protocol was breached. Maintain close follow-up with your plastic surgeon and this should heal fairly quickly (a few weeks if you’re not diabetic or a smoker). Best wishes for a quick recovery. Dr. Lindsay
