I have a hole in my nipples from a breast reduction. What should I do? (Photo)

breast reduction Jan 29. trouble with left breast.started as a small whole then got bigger.has a mild odor and draining. Was told that it’s tissue that didn’t survive and is draining. asked for an antibiotic and have been changing my dressings.beginning to scab now.right breast was ok but now it’s starting to do the same thing. It’s draining some fluid. I’m scared to get an infection or a much larger whole or even a skin graft. I was thinking about getting a second option. What do you think?

Dear Imaginative6853,
this type of wound is not uncommon after breast reduction. It is usually caused by poor blood flow. I would suggest you to consult your plastic surgeon, follow your surgeon's instructions and keep your wound clean and covered. It can take few weeks or months for wound to fully heal.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I'm very sorry that you're going through this wound on your breasts. Unfortunately this is one of the rare complictions of a breast reduction. With careful wound care of dressing changes, you will most likely heal and the scab with go away. You have to keep it clean and dry. It it best to follow up with your surgeon who performed this surgery. We're very happy to see you and help you along with your healing process.

I am sorry to see that you have developed partial nipple necrosis on this side. The management of this is regular good wound care and allow the black scab to gradually come away from the base. This can take some time, and may require occasional antibiotics. Ultimately you may be left with an irregular Nipple areola which your surgeon should be able to improve in time
If you continue to have any concerns of course you should always return to your PS for advice and reassurance.
