Thanks for your question . Narcotics tend to slow the GI tract and can indeed lead to bloating and constipation after surgery. In my own practice I recommend stool softeners such as Colace, mineral oil or bulk agents before surgery to help make things easier after surgery. If a patient is constipated after surgery I favor things that work from the rectum such as a Dulcolax suppository or fleet enema. If you take things by mouth that stimulate you they can make you even more uncomfortable. Breast reduction often does not require prolonged use of narcotics. The sooner you are off the narcotics, the sooner the bowel can return to normal. Check in with your own PS about what regimen is best for you in the context of your medical history.Best wishes.
