4 weeks post-op T junction breast reduction. Have had an open wound, when will it heal? (photo)

Dear jade.pamela,this type of wound is not uncommon after breast lift. It is usually caused by poor blood flow. I would suggest you to consult your plastic surgeon, follow your surgeon's instructions and keep your wound clean and covered. Its not unusual to experience small areas of wound breakdown after breast reduction surgery.  Typically they heal well without any intervention.  I advise all my patients to refrain from smoking during the post operative period as it can delay wound healing.

Breakdown of the wound after a breast reduction at the T junction is a very common problem. People who are smokers are at an increased risk for this. 

In order to minimize the chance of wound complications, I advise all of my patients to be off of all nicotine products 4 weeks prior to surgery and 6 weeks after surgery. 

Even one cigarette can affect your wound healing. It takes nicotine 3 weeks to be cleared by the body. 
Please make sure you make your surgeon aware of this issue and follow his/her instructions on wound care. 
Refraining from all nicotine products should keep this from getting larger. 
With proper wound care most of these will heal nicely.
