I have an incisional hernia at my sternum from a gall bladder removal surgery. I had it repaired once and it came back. I need surgery but I also would like to get a breast reduction. Can these two procedures be done at the same time?
Answer: Multiple Surgeries Yes, it is OK to have a breast reduction and hernia surgery. I recommend an in-office examination as well as a detailed discussion with a surgeon who you are comfortable with. Finally, make sure your surgeon is a Double-Board Certified Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).Best,Dr. DesaiBeverly Hills Institute for Aesthetic Plastic SurgeryHarvard Educated, Beverly Hills & Miami Beach TrainedDouble Board-Certified Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon

Answer: Is it possible to have a breast reduction and hernia repair at the same time? Yes, assuming you are in good health and good candidate for both procedures (safety of combination surgery is best individualized and evaluated during in-person consultation), should be able to undergo both procedures. You will need to find a board-certified plastic surgeon who feels comfortable performing both procedures or seek the care of a plastic surgeon for the breast reduction and a general surgeon for the repair of the recurrent hernia. Best wishes.

Answer: Combining a reduction with hernia repair can certainly be done if you can coordinate the surgeons needed to do this for you. You will have to get participating providers who work with your insurance company and the surgeon's will have to be willing to work with each other and clearly delineate who is responsible for what when you are recovering so you call the appropriate surgeon if you have any concerns post-op.

Answer: Multiple Procedures Thanks for your question- the answer is certainly yes, that you can have both surgeries at the same time. With a history of general surgery, my bigger question is why has your previous hernia repair broken down? Your breast reduction is likely very straight forward, as most reductions are uncomplicated and this is a relatively easy procedure. Your recurrent incisional hernia, while likely very correctable, should be evaluated by someone comfortable with the anatomy and natural progression of this process so another recurrence does not occur. Please see a Board Certified plastic surgeon who is fully trained in general surgery as well to ensure a more comprehensive evaluation and solution to both issues.Best of luck!Dr. L
