Considering a deep peel. Why do some people get bad burns and scars from medium to deep peel but others get great results?

Thank you for your question about chemical peels.There are several different factors that can affect the out come of chemical peels.  1.  The technique of the person doing the peel.  Be sure you are seeing an experienced provider.  2.  The state of the skin prior to the peel.  It is advised with most peels that you stop using some topical skin products such as retinoic acid.  3.  The care of the skin post procedure.  It is very important to follow the skin care instructions given by your provider.  A couple of important directions are to avoid the sun, avoid vigorous exercise (sweating), and do not scrub or "peel" the skin as it begins to peel.  


To be sure, see two or more experienced, licensed and board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have treatment.

The result depends on type of your skin (you may or may not be a good candidate for a deep peel) and who is doing your peel. Patients can achieve a great result if appropriate medium to deep chemical peel is chosen and performed correctly. At our center, physician performs the deep peel under IV sedation and the lighter peels are done by medical estheticians. I would not necessarily believe everything you see or read on line either about deep peels. They can be safely performed with excellent result.  

I use the Vi peel system they have 3 strengths and like most peels require 3-5 sessions. The High% TCA and especially the phenol should only be done by a trained MD. This is especially true for the phenol peel and you may need a cardiac evaluation before having the phenol. 
Deep peels give the best wow factor but have risks. If you pick at the peeling skin essentially tearing off pieces that haven't peeled yet you risk scars. Infection can also occur. Its very important if you want one of these to see a medical doctor trained in the administration and performs the procedure fairly often.
