There are many things you can do to treat under eye hollows and dark circles. Your observation that your tear trough was inherited from your father is absolutely correct. I would never have a filler injected into the tear trough or lower eyelid where the skin is very thin and in the long run results are rather poor with the movement of the filler and creating a bag like appearance.  Congenital tear troughs are ready made for filler or fat grafting if done properly by an expert. The problem is the attachment of the muscles on the bone below the orbital rim and the orbital ligament. The proper filler is Juvederm Voluma or Radiesse placed just above the origin of the muscle and below the ligament on the bone. Fat placed similarly, but spread out to allow vascularization, also works well. Make sure you choose an expert with many years experience.
