Could I have Silent Sinus Syndrome? (photos)

Question

Eyes have hollowed dramatically over last month. I am experiencing soreness, dry eyes and headaches. Prior to this happening my nose has changed shape which has resulted in me having a blocked nose most days and particularly when sleeping. I am seeing an Ophthalmologist next week.

I appreciate your question and I’m sorry to hear about the symptoms you have developed recently. Changes to orbital positioning can be an indication of silent sinus syndrome, but it usually occurs on one side of the face only. That said, your symptoms do indicate possible sinus issues, which should be assessed by an experienced otolaryngologist. A CT sinus scan will reveal whether you do have silent sinus syndrome or another condition requiring treatment. Today’s sinus treatments are much less invasive, with fewer patients needing full surgical procedures than ever before. Once an accurate diagnosis is made, you and your specialist can determine the best course of treatment for you. Good luck to you!

Thanks for your question. Silent sinus typically refers to an inflamed sinus that is blocked largely due to a congenital malformation that has made that sinus much smaller than normal. It rarely if ever manifests with any changes to physical appearance. Hope this helps.

The inward eye movement could be from silent sinus syndrome but it would be very unusual to see it bilaterally. Hemifacial atrophy is also a possibility. This condition can occur from reduced volume of either the frontal or maxillary sinuses. A sinus CT confirms the diagnosis.
