I am 24 and As you can see my hairline is miniaturising and my crown is has been thinning for approximately 2 and half years. I decided to take propecia approximately 6-7 months ago consistently and I will soon start evolis, a study was done and showed positive results in terms of hair loss reduction and regrowth. Would this aid in improving my hair and should I stay on propecia as the results are very modest at the moment? Thank you
Answer: Propecia and hair loss Propecia has been in use for 20 years and is quite safe. The most commonly reported side effect is loss of libido or sexual dysfunctions-this occurs in 1-2% of those taking the medication. The major effect of Finasteride is to stop hair loss;secondarily it may help thicken already miniaturized hairs. It would probably be best to continue on the Propecia but I would discuss this with your physician.

Answer: Propecia regrowth Without a scalp analysis of before and after it is difficult to tell. This should be judged by your surgeon. You mention you were actively losing your hair for approximately two years if finasteride has slowed the previous rate of hair loss or stopped it from regressing then it is a positive result and I would continue taking it. Patients always want hair regrowth, and the only sure fire way of achieving this is with a transplant. At 24 you are still quite young for a hair transplant so my view would be to continue taking propecia and then have a transplant when your doctor deems appropriate. Evolis is not MHRA or FDA approved and the study you mention has a poor design so I would not trust it. FDA approved medical hair loss treatments are Propecia, Minoxidil and Low level laser. In my practice I have seen promising results with Platelet Rich Plasma for hair growth and there are a number of well designed randomised controlled trials documenting its efficacy.

Answer: Hair loss Propecia is better for prevention and stopping future hair loss more so then regrowing hair. You should switch to an organic shampoo. You can also consider a natural DHT blocker like Saw Palmetto. Before taking any medications you should discuss this with your general physician.

Answer: Finasteride Men using finasteride (who respond) see improvements even into the second and third year. At six month, you really can't say how well you are likely to respond. Not all hair loss drugs are created equal. Finasteride has major effects to disrupt the balding process. Potential side effects are also greater and anyone considering this drug needs to take the time to understand these side effects. Other treatments may have a minor benefit; results are less but potential side effects are less. One must create their own list of what type of results they want and what type of potential side effects they are willing to accept. Nothing tops the 5 alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride and dutasteride) to the present day as far as results go.
