What is serial excision?

Hi, I had never heard of this scar revision technique before but have just come across it and it is of some interest to me. I have researched it but cannot find out much about it. Can anyone explain the exact procedure and how long it takes? Also what would the final result be, does this technique leave the patient with a smaller scar than normal excision?

A normal excision requires a football shaped tissue removal that is 2.5 to 3 times as long as the width of whatever tissue is being removed. This can create a very long scar, especially on the face. Serial excision is typically 2-3 procedures during which part of the width of the scar or lesion is removed each time. This results in a scar that is much shorter but still enables complete removal of whatever the tissue is that must be removed. Make sure that your chosen surgeon is very experienced in the technique. This is when multiple stages in procedures are used to remove the area in question.  Its basically small skin surgeries over time to limit scars.  Best, Dr. Emer.
