How long do you keep dressings after breast reduction?

Question

I had my breast reduction on 9th October. I had it abroad so don,t have any post op checks. I had no drains and have soluble stitches. The advice from my surgeon is to keep the dressings on for 2 weeks and not to shower. However on reading the other women,s experience on the forums they seem to take there dressings off quite soon after. Just wondered if this post op care is normal

Congratulations on having undergone the breast reduction procedure. You will find, that every plastic surgeon has a different “protocol” when it comes to issues such as dressings and showers… Best to keep in communication with your plastic surgeon; my long distance patients will communicate via phone and e-mail routinely. You may also wish to seek follow-up with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area for accurate evaluation and treatment recommendations. The advice you receive online can be conflicting/confusing. Best wishes for an outcome that you will be very please with long-term.

Every surgeon will vary.  In our practice, we allow showering 48 hours after surgery and we ask that the patient place new, clean dressings under.  That way they can see the wounds, make sure the nipples remain pink and viable, monitor for infection or hematoma, and they can keep the incisions  clean.Since you had your surgery abroad, call your surgeon and review matters with him/her.
