Is fat freezing safe with a VP shunt?

Question

I have a VP shunt for hydrocephalus. Would it be safe for me to have a fat freezing (cryolipolysis) session on my stomach? The clinic has said it's safe but I would like to make sure. They said it only affects the fat layer and that the shunt is behind the abdominal wall. Does freezing the fat affect a shunt which may be underneath it?

There should not be a problem having a cryolipolysis treatment to the abdomen with a VP shunt.  The clinic that you went to was correct when they said the treatment would only affect the fat layer and nothing beneath it.

The CoolSculpt applicators are designed to reach only the subcutaneous layers of fat, which is superficial to your abdominal muscles and organs. CoolSculpt is safe to use if you have a VP shunt. However, VP shunts do adhere risks of blood pressure and heart rate fluctuations, I would prefer that you consult with your primary care physician or a physician that knows your Hydrocephalus history very well. CoolSculpting only targets the fat and will not effect a VP shunt.  However, it is always best to consult with your physician prior to treatment.

There should be no problems for you to have CoolSculpting done to your abdomen. The shunt will be unaffected since the treatment will be done to the fat overlying your muscles and the VP shunt is located in your abdomen under the muscle layer. Best wishes, Mary Beth Mudd
