I'm now 22 days post ankle knee and calf vaser. Is that fat at my outer ankle or still swelling? Review in 2 weeks (photo)

lower extremity liposuction stays swollen for a long time after the procedure. The best way to determine if this is swelling is to compare the results at the end of the day compared to you in the morning when you been laying flat. At 22 days it's much too early to judge.  I typically tell patients they can start anticipating their final results at six weeks but for calves and ankles liposuction you can multiply this times three.  You need a minimum of 3 to 6 months before you can assess your final results.  Try leg elevations. If the area swells significantly with gravity then this is mostly swelling if the area persists despite like elevations especially in the morning then there may still be some fat but I would not make any judgments at this point.  It is extremely challenging to get consistent great results with no contour irregularities and significant debulking around the ankles.  Best, Mats Hagstrom M.D.

As you are extremely early in your postoperative course, one cannot discern between swelling and residual fat as the swelling still obscures the operative result. 60-80% will resolve by the 6th week with the reminder slowly resolving over 6-12 months. As your legs are the most dependent part of your body when standing or sitting, the swelling will take longer to resolve than elsewhere. Some surgeons employ ultrasonic or radiofrequency therapy to hasten resolution.
Continue followup with your plastic surgeon.
