Type of cleanser when on Accutane?

Question

Hello. I have mild to moderate acne and I am on my fifth day of accutane( 30mg). I just encountered mild dry lips but when washing my face with an acne cleanser for oily skin ( i feel my skin becomes irritated). I don't know if I should use a cleanser for oily or dry skin so am temporarily not using one. Please recommend a type of cleanser.

Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers.

Cetaphil wash or Avene foaming mousse are good options. Both can be found in Walgreens or Duane Reade.  Be well.

If your face is irritated while on Accutane, I suggest Cetaphil lotion as a cleanser.   You can also use any number of mild soaps but have to try them to see if you like them.No need to go for expensive products.

Thank your for your question. I recommend using gentle facial cleansers while on Accutane therapy. A side effect of Accutane is dry skin, so I suggest using hydrating gentle facial cleansers such as CeraVe or Cetaphil. Take care and good luck.
