Sculptra-jaw pain, difficulty opening mouth and chewing after injection. Is this normal?

I won 2 vials of sculptra in a raffle at Dr's office. I had one vial of injected into my temples 3 days ago and I still have terrible jaw pain and can hardly open my mouth to eat. How long will this last? Is it normal?

Hello,It's quite common to experience tenderness such as you are describing following Sculptra injection treatments.  This tends to be even more common with treatments to the temples and along the sides of the face.  The high volume of fluid used tends to stretch the muscle fibers causing more sensitivity with chewing and opening the mouth wide.  The massaging required following Sculptra also lends to tenderness initially. This usually resolves in the first few days, and using Ibuprofen is helpful.  Always follow up with your injector so that they may offer additional feedback.

This is not an uncommon complaint after injections with Sculptra around the temples and typically resolves within a few days.  I suggest making  a follow-up appointment with the treating physician so he or she can assess you in person.  Please follow-up with them regarding what medication to take for inflammation and pain relief.

Congratulations on winning your Sculptra treatment!  Sculptra is one of my favorite products for adding subtle and natural volume to the temples - it works by gradually stimulating your body to product additional collagen.  It's not uncommon to experience mild pain and tenderness, especially with speaking and chewing, with Sculptra injections - I find this is especially true when I treat the temples and cheekbones.  For now, gently applying ice or cool compresses can be helpful.  You may also consider taking an over-the-counter pain medication like Tylenol or ibuprofen as needed.  Please follow-up with your doctor if you have any concerns.  Best of luck!
