Botox on Masseter - how can I get this resolved? (Photo)

Question

Been doing Botox to slim my jaw since 2016 (every 3 months, total 45 units). Initially I used to get crooked smiles but over the years it disappeared while doing the procedure. Last year, I noticed that the slimming effect started reducing compared to earlier years. After the one I got done in November, my jaw slimming almost stopped. I got another one done in March. I feel weakness in my jaws while clenching but no slimming effects at all. What could be happening and how can I get this resolved

Since you've had great success with slimming the masseter muscle in the past, your muscle is likely quite small at this point. You can easily check this by putting your hands next to your jaw on both sides and clenching down. If there is movement, then additional Botox/Dysport is necessary to reduce it appropriately to achieve the volume reduction.  If there is no movement, then there may be another factor contributing to the volume in the area. Some possibilities could include more subcutaneous fat or sagging skin in the area.

When we are treating TMJ or message her hypertrophy, sometimes we use up to 75 units of Botox to achieve a desired result. The other possibility might be changing from Botox to a different neurotoxin like Xeomin. Wishing you well. Sincerely, Dr Joseph

It is possible that your muscles are no longer the full issue.  Perhaps there is scar tissue or other tissue in the area.  I will routinely go in through the mouth to reduce, surgically, the size of the muscle in that area.  Or, if it is another tissue, we can address that in a minimally invasive approach

If you feel that you Masseter is weaker after the last treatment using Botox, then the most likely explanation for the loss of the slimming effect is the fact that you may have gained some weight. I hope this helps and good luck from New York City plastic surgery.
