Question

Hi there a few years ago I got FUT transplant. The main thing I wanted was to feel confident be comfortable pulling my hair back. The surgeon spaced the follicles too far apart and now I feel even less confident than before. How can this be remedied? I'm based in Toronto but willing to travel locally (or further after the pandemic). The procedure already cost me so much money. Any help appreciated.

The hairline results you are pointing out are quite common amongst strip transplant patients. This is due to the fact that thicker hair is used. Your hairline is supposed to be very soft along the outer edge. To recreate this appearance, only thin hairs (i.e. single-haired follicular units) should be used. Pluggy outcomes like yours arise when the follicular unit grafts contain more than one hair follicle creating bundles of 3-5+ hairs).

A repair would be necessary to fix your results so that only thinner single-haired follicles are placed in the outmost regions. Below is an example of a similar case from my office in Los Angeles, the Dr. U Hair and Skin Clinic. Here, we used leg hair. But alternate choices of thin hair could also be used (e.g. nape).  It would be best to find a provider, near you who specializes in this type of approach.

The only solution to fix your hairline is by going trough another Hair transplant. I advice you to get DHI technique, direct hair implantation. I know you are already devastated by your first experience. But you can look and do research about DHI. I looks like the surgeon put your hairline in the female shape and used larger grafts in the leading edge of the hairline. I would have to make a determination as to where your hairline belongs and consider removing some of the grafts that are outside a normal hairline and reshape.
