After Botox for masseter muscle wears off, will my jaw return to my pre-injected state?

I appreciate your question and your concern. Botox is a neuromodulator that works by relaxing muscles to achieve a desired effect. Most of the time, Botox is used as an anti-wrinkle treatment, but it is also effective in relaxing a masseter muscle that has become enlarged by overuse. When the muscle becomes inactive, it also reduces in size, leading to subtle slimming of the jawline. It will not significantly impact the overall shape of your face; just make it a bit narrower. I would suggest starting with a relatively low dose to see how your muscle responds. I’ve seen patients from other providers with too high a dose, resulting in an overly dramatic change.
Botox injections take full effect in about two weeks. However, with the masseter slimming, it can take up to one month to see a pretty but subtle contouring. Those results will last three to four months. As they wear off, your muscle will become fully active once again and return to its original state. If you like the effect, you will need to schedule regular touch-up sessions to maintain it. Make sure the doctor you work with is board certified with expertise in using Botox in this area to ensure an optimal outcome.

Botox injections offer temporary improvement and the results usually wear off within three to four months. At this time, you would need to schedule another treatment to maintain your new look. If you don’t have more treatments, the jawline will return to its same appearance before the procedure. Botox is not known to cause any long-term side effects.

The effects of Botox are temporary, so any changes made is expected to revert back to baseline gradually as the Botox wears off although some effects might last longer. For example, if masseter muscle hypertrophy is related to overusing jaw muscles, and if you get used to not using it as much once you got the Botox injection, the muscle might not grow back as large as before once the Botox has worn off unless you start overusing it again. In general, we see patients needing less number of units of Botox needed in future repeat treatments of jaw muscle as the muscle gets less bulky. I hope it helps and good luck! 

Botox is commonly used to slim down enlarged masseter muscles.  When these muscles are treated, it will cause the sides of the face above the jaw to be slimmer.  Once the Botox wears off, the pre-treatment appearance will normally return over time

Dear zanelabwThank you for your question!  The Botox - depending on the dose - will cause the muscle to thin down- and your posterior jawline will slim down. The effect can last 9 months to a year - if you are grinding your teeth the muscle will likely regrow.With Warm RegardsTrevor M Born MD

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  For most masseter hypertrophy patients a visible, temporary change can be seen with Botox into the jaw to help give a slimmed appearance. Once the botox wears off your muscle will grow back to its original size.  Hope this helps.

She or he will have to assess you in person to determine if targeting the masseter muscles is what is required to achieve your goals. Botox can slim the masseter muscles so it will change the shape of your face somewhat. The result depends on how large the muscles are. The effect will last for about 3 to 6 months and your face will return to its previous shape.
