For how many weeks should I wear the compression headband after revision face lift? 3 weeks p.o.

Question

I had revision face-lift 3 weeks ago after botched first attempt 2 years ago. What is the best recommended for the following: How long need I wear the head bandage? How long before I can lie down to sleep? How long before I can sleep on my side again? Plus I was prescribed Betnovate 1% cream to use twice daily for 3 months post surgery. I feel this might be excessive.. doesn't steroid cream thin the skin? My skin is apparently already very thin. I DO NOT want to ever have to go back.

Thank you for your questions. I do not use compression dressings on any of my facelifts whether they are revision or first time facelift. I do not feel they have any relevance to the healing and therefore do not use them. I have carried out almost 3000 facelifts to date and have not used compression dressings in any of them.Each surgeon will have their specific instructions and so it would be advisable to ask your surgeon all these questions to know his post operative after care regimen.With respect to your questions - or my patients, what I advise is : 1) sleep on a couple of pillows so you are slightly elevated - you do not need to sleep totally upright. You can sleep on your side after about a week - generally the reason for avoiding this is because it is uncomfortable. 2) I do not routinely use betnovate immediately after surgery. This is a steroid based cream and can result in thinning of the skin. I am not sure why you were asked to do this and I would check this with you PS. He/ She will probably have a reason for why he wants to use this. I hope this is helpful for you

Postoperative instructions after a revision facelift in my practice are quite individualized. Depending of the type of techniques utilized, some patients would wear a compression device for up to a week, and some would not; some may place their cheek on the pillow after a few days, while some would have to wait longer.  Only your surgeon can determine your post-operative regimen. In general, compression bandages after about a week might be excessive, likewise steroidal creams are rarely used for extended period of time. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
