Should I take anti-inflammatory meds for otoplasty? 1 week post-op.

Question

I had otoplasty 8 days ago and my ears are still quite swollen and they haven't changed much in the last few days. What are some methods to reduce swelling? I have kept them wrapped this entire time.

Taking NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, etc.) would certainly be reasonable, antis important to maintain head elevation.  Wrapping typically will have little effect.. If you are concerned, I would recommend following up with your surgeon to ensure everything is healing properly.  Best wishes.

Good dayAnti-inflammatories can help but it is normal have swelling up to 3-4weeks postoperatively.  It is important to stay off your eyes,, sleeping on your back, sleeping upright, apply ice in the first weeks and keep them wrapped until your surgeon tells you to.  If you have any concerns please contact a board certified plastic surgeon.  Thank you

You certainly can take NSAIDS at this point or even steroids but consult your surgeon first.  If you still have significant swelling it's possible you need close monitoring the next 3-6 weeks in the even scar tissue is forming and you need a kenalog or 5-FU shot.Chase Lay MD

It is normal to still have swelling just 8 days following otoplasty.  My patients are usually taking tylenol for discomfort/swelling at this point in their recovery.  Reach out to your surgeon for an examination in person, if concerning swelling persists.  Good luck!
