IPL photofacial gone wrong? Left with worse scarring. (photo)

Question

I got a ipl photofacial about a month ago and the day i went i was left with burning swollen spots she told me it would be normal the next day i wokeup with burns she also said it was normal due to my face probably tanned prior. I left it alone until it healed properly and i was left with pink baby like skin but only on those spots. A month later my face is 3 different colors and it really bugs me because its very noticable. I cant get anything to make it go away or even cover it. Help!

Hyperpigmentation can be improved with a combination of lasers, Aerolase, microneedling/prp, skin lightening, peels, and skin care. Sun protection is essential. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer

Thanks for your question and posting pictures.  I'm very sorry to see your injury.  IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is only safe for Skin Types I-III without any recent sun exposure.  IPL without proper supervision can be extremely dangerous.  Our ICON IPL comes with the only melanin reader available that is used to help determine safe treatment settings.Your splotchy complexion may resolve on its own.  You would benefit from a consultation in a medical setting to determine other options.  It could be as simple as some topical creams, a series of chemical peels or another laser that is safe for your skin type.  Best of luck.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. The good news is, that although the best treatments involve taking it slow, this usually does improve. One of the biggest mistakes is to jump in and try to fix it as quickly as possible with more IPL and lasers - this adds even more stimulation to the skin and can worsen the problem. It is essential that you avoid sun on the area and get started on a combination of hydroquinone and a retinol. It is best to wait at least a few months and see your improvement at that point before considering more IPL or lasers to improve any remaining pigment. Be sure to see an experienced cosmetic dermatologist comfortable with IPL / laser treatments in ethnic skin.
