Malar bags swollen after Belotero. How long does it typically take to resolve? Why are they reacting? (Photo)

Question

Two days ago I got 1 syringe of Belotero injected into my upper cheek/eye area to remedy tear trough lines that went down my cheek. I've had 1 syringe injected before with a cannula with no issue, but after having it done with a needle, my malar pads are large and squishy. The doctor has told me this is normal, but how long does it typically take to resolve and why are they reacting?

Hi and thank you for your question! The swelling following filler injection under the eyes is quite common and it might take up to 2 weeks to fully subside and at time, any concerns can be best addressed by your injector. This being said, filler injections under the eyes require a great level of skill and experience to achieve best aesthetic results. Issues related with malar bags and alike (if due to the filler itself and not temporary swelling) can often be avoided by careful injection of fillers at other areas nearby instead of focusing on under the eyes only. Some swelling is typical after cheek augmentation injections and should resolve in 1-2 weeks. If you're unhappy with your final results, you can have HA filler reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your question and photos.
It can take up to 2 weeks for swelling from tear trough injections to go away. The skin in this area is very thin. You can help with very light ice pack, not applying too much pressure and trying Arnica. If after 2 weeks, you are still having significant swelling then return to your injector and have them evaluate you.

After receiving Belotero Injections, a local inflammatory reaction can occur. This is temporary and usually lasts less than 7 days. It is best to avoid strenuous activity, sun or heat exposure, aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, and alcoholic beverages for a few days after the procedure.
